Baby Boomers – When the Cat’s Away, How Do You Play?

by Anne Holmes on September 21, 2009

Right from the get-go, this post is not about running around on our significant others. It’s about baby boomers and what we do when we have time to ourselves. So often the baby boomer generation cares for our children, granchildren and parents. Every now and then, we get a break in the action.

A couple weekends ago, my husband went to Florida to visit his good friend (the best man in our wedding from umpteen years ago) as he does twice a year. They fish, play tennis, watch tennis, eat grilled-red meat, and drink ice cold beer. They rehash the good old days and laugh a lot.

I can’t tell you how much I enjoy my little break in the action. Those who know me totally understand how much I adore this guy, but when I get a long weekend to myself, it’s glorious; no time restraints, no one to care for, just plain old freedom.

Here’s how I spent my weekend:

• Ran errands Thursday evening to get them out of the way
• Worked most of Friday
• Took three, one hour walks with my walking partner and dear friend
• Ate a huge salad and nothing else
• Walked my dog to the courthouse where there are gorgeous gardens and sat as long as I wanted with her under my feet

• Took nice, warm bubble baths
• Surfed the TV with the remote in my hand
• Gardened
• Headed to my son’s house to take him and his visiting friend to lunch at Regi’s in Federal Hill

• Walked around Federal Hill with gorgeous blue skies overhead, bought boots, and ate ice cream
• Took a quick nap for 25 minutes before taking dinner to Dad’s
• Took steamed shrimp, corn on the cob, and tomatoes to Dad’s, and visited with him, my brother and sister-in-law

• Met my daughter and her beau for their late dinner and enjoyed a Frozen Bahamarita
• Leisurely read The Wishing Year: A House, A Man, My Soul, by Noelle Oxenhandler
• Worshipped at church

So there you have it. Not the most exciting stuff in the world, but these are the things I enjoy when I have time alone.

How about telling me what you like to do when you have time to yourself?
